Local Search Tips

If you have a small business then you have an advantage over the businesses that have to compete with nationwide competitors.

Let’s take an example…

If you were a chiropractor and wanted to get some new clients would you go after the phrase:

1- “chiropractor”
2- “chiropractor Jefferson”
3- “chiropractor Jefferson GA”

Let’s look at the competition for these terms:

1- “chiropractor” 7,840,000 competing pages
2- “chiropractor Jefferson” 2,500,000 competing pages
3- “chiropractor Jefferson GA” 37,200 competing pages

Now if you look at the results would you rather compete against 7,840,000 other pages or against 37,200 pages?

The lesson here is to go after the low hanging fruit first. Go after the people in your neighborhood!

Marketing Lesson From The Atlanta Flood

Think of all the thousands of people in Atlanta whose homes and belongings were destroyed with the 2009 Atlanta flood.

Unfortunately, the majority of them DID NOT have flood insurance. Flood insurance is not part of your normal home owners insurance policy. It is an extra OPTIONAL insurance coverage that most people pass by, thinking it could NEVER happen to me.

Now here we are, the ground is still saturated and it rained again the other day. Many of the homes that were flooded … were flooded yet AGAIN! These poor folks will have to spend tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket to pay for all of the Atlanta water damage restoration that is required for their homes.

If they only had insurance…

Hindsight is always 2020, isn’t it? If they only knew it was going to happen then they would have gotten the extra insurance!

Well what does this have to do with marketing? Think about it for a moment. We are in one of the worst recessions in 5o years. Small businesses are closing left and right around you. The end is no where in sight, in fact… it’s going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better.

Well what are you going to do about it NOW? It is amazing how many people are using web pages that are still virtually invisible to the public. If you wanted to find them on Google you would never be able to. Search engine optimization, video’s and social marketing can change that for you very quickly. Getting professional marketing help can be likened to getting the insurance you wished you would have gotten after it is too late.

Don’t be the proverbial ostrich that sticks their head in the sand. Get marketing help and get it now unless you want to be a statistic by this time next year. Remember the flood of 2009 and learn from it!

Today I spoke with Jim Lloyd of the Jim Lloyd Group, an insurance company in Duluth Georgia. Jim has been in the business over the last 25 years and has built up 4 insurance agencies through out the greater Atlanta area.

Jim successfully runs a 2 page insert in the yellow pages. He tells me it pulls plenty of phone calls but unfortunately he knows it is no where near the volume of calls it used to generate only a few years ago.

The website is a very nice one. It is clean and easy to use. Unfortunately, the website builder didn’t build it with SEO in mind. For example the “Title” of his site is the name of the company that build his website.

This is not uncommon. As we have discussed before whether you are an insurance company, plumber, electrician etc if you go to a traditional website company you will get a beautiful website. However it will virtually be invisible in the search engines.

Jim and I talked about the importance of optimizing a website to help it rank in the search engines by building links and adding good content. I went to visit a local Jefferson Georgia chiropractic office near my home office today. I was greeted by a burly gentlemen with three beautiful children who introduced himself as Dr. Torey Evans. I found him a very pleasant fellow that is passionate about helping people.

I found out about Dr. Evans because his office is right next door to the coffee shop that I frequent downtown. I gave him a ring & he agreed to a complimentary marketing consultation whereby we would look at his current marketing assets and see how he might be under utilizing them at the present. Often with a few tweaks, suggestions and a little guidance we can make a dramatic impact on a small business … without having to spend any more money on advertising.

Dr. Evans is like most chiropractors in that they are so busy in the business they never have the time to work “on the business”, as Michael Gerber of the “e-myth” teaches us. So we began with the USP or “Unique Selling Proposition”.

I asked him, “Why should people choose to come to you instead of another Chiropractor or Doctor?”

Torey, hesitated for a moment, as most business owners do. He never had thought about it before. Then he began to list off a few things that might make his practice “different”.

Why Should People Go To Dr. Torey Evans?

1. First he purposely keeps his over head low. Why is this important to the client? Because that means he can afford to keep his pricing low enough for the everyday person to get an adjustment or treatment. Many people do not have health insurance in this economy so they are on a cash basis. Dr. Torey makes his services affordable enough for everyone to take advantage of.

2. Dr. Torey is the lowest priced chiropractor in town. Where as everyone else in this area is charging $35 to $45 for a basic adjustment, Dr. Torey is having a “recession buster special” at only $25 a visit. This means that people who are struggling economically can still benefit from chiropractic care. It also means the difference between someone being able to afford a second visit per month or not.

3. Whereas some of the other local chiropractors only offer “standard adjustments” to their clients. Dr. Torrey also offers ADDITIONAL therapies to his clients like ice therapy, heat therapy and trigger therapy. There is also a massage therapist available.

4. Here then is the million dollar question … I asked him, ” Are you educating every patient and every prospect on your USP?” Dr. Torey agreed that this one thing suggestion could make a big impact on his business.
