Link Building Explained

Just as elections are won and lost by the number of people who place their vote for particular candidate, so too your website rankings depend on how many other sites "Vote" for you by giving you an incoming link to your website.

It is vital that your link building campaign take these 7 tips into consideration. If you are looking to have someone help you do this, you should judge them by how much they take the time to educate you about these things. Otherwise you could be paying for the wrong kind of links!

All Links Are Not Created Equally

At the same time however, this is simply not a popularity contest. Certain rules apply. Knowing these rules will make all the difference in the world as to your search engine rankings.

1- Quality Not Quantity: Years ago you could simply rank well for the mere quantity of your links. The more the better. But then people started concentrating on building tens of thousands of links pointing to their sites. The majority of these sites had nothing to do with their website's theme. 

The result is that today the search engines value links that are theme oriented. 200 incoming theme related links will outweigh 1000 non theme related links. So if you had a site on dentistry then incoming links from a gambling site will not help. In fact they might hurt you.

2- The higher the PR rank of the site the better: Google assigns a page rank to each website.  The higher the page rank the better. Twenty  incoming links from websites with pageranks of  5, 6 7 will outpull  1000 incoming links with a page rank of 0,1, and 2.

3-  Stay away from the bad neighborhoods: You do not want incoming links from any websites that use questionable tactics. Stay away from link farms and websites that promote hate, violence, pornography etc.

4- Reciprocal Links: You can trade links with other websites in your same industry. These carry some weight but not as much as they used too. Google knows you are trading so they don't give it as much weight as they used to. It's OK to do, just remember to stay within your theme or industry

5- One way links: These are the holy graille of the links available to you. Specifically, we are looking for one way links from authority sites in your industry pointing directly to your site.

6- The Value Of Deep Links: It is not good for all of your incoming links to be pointing to your main page of your site. Instead Google is looking to see a balanced portion of your links being evenly distributed through out your website. The term "Deep Links" implies that people are linking to pages other then your main page.  If you are suffering in the search engine rankings it could be because you need more deep linking.

7-What does the link say?: It is not good for all of your incoming links to say the same thing over and over. It is important to vary the keywords used. For example if all of my incoming links say: click here   -- It is not going to be very effective. Yet how often do you see this?

Here is another common mistake: frank-marketing.com

Why is this a mistake? Because it will only help me get ranked for "frank-marketing.com" and how many people are searching for that phrase? Probably no one. Remember to use important keywords and to vary them.

8-Keywords Researched: Your linkbuilding program must begin with proper keyword research. Otherwise your work, efforts and money will help to get you ranked for the wrong words, terms and phrases. What good is it to be ranked number one for some obscure "long tail" phrase that no one is looking for!
